Lung Cancer Prevention

HELIXMOKER is a cancer prevention program specifically designed for smokers and people heavily exposed to air pollution. The risk assessment is based on the monitoring of mutations in genes directly involved in the onset of cancers of the respiratory system, such as lung cancer.

Prolonged exposure to smoke and air pollution damages DNA. When the organism is no longer able to repair the damage, the frequency of mutations increases and the phenomenon of genomic instability occurs, which precedes the onset of the tumor in the so-called prodromal phase, without symptoms.

Indications

Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer; the existence of a clear cause-effect relationship between smoking and disease has in fact been scientifically proven. The relative risk of smokers increases about 14 times compared to non-smokers and up to 20 times when they smoke more than 20 cigarettes per day.

Cigarette smoking is responsible for 8-9 out of 10 lung cancers, while other factors may be added, such as air pollution or a family history of cancer.

What the test evaluates

With HELIXMOKER both smokers and people exposed to air pollution can undergo annual monitoring to ensure that the damage done to the body by smoking is kept under control. The damage is evident on the genetic level with an increase in the mutation frequencies of specific genes linked to the respiratory system. For this reason, through the analysis of the mutational genetic profile, it is possible to prevent cancer of the respiratory system by acting on their prodromal, asymptomatic phase.

An innovative model

Today, with the Helixafe Program, it is possible to evaluate objective parameters, such as somatic or acquired mutations, which can be analyzed using the most modern techniques of liquid biopsy and sequencing (Next Generation Sequencing). Thanks to NGS, it is possible to monitor the mutation frequencies in the patient and then analyze the genomic instability through the algorithm patented by the Bioscience Institute..

Clear results

The sensitivity of the test is 100%. Therefore, a stable mutation rate can very reliably indicate that the risk of developing cancer has not increased.

On the other hand, an unstable (increasing) mutation rate may indicate that the body is no longer able to repair the DNA damage, as a result of prolonged exposure to smoke or other pollutants.

How the test is performed

The Bioscience Institute offers pre-test advice and provides all useful information about the HELIXAFE prevention program and the execution of the HELIXMOKER test.

All that is required is a simple blood sample (10-20 cc of blood) which can be performed at one of our reference centers or through your doctor.

The sample sent to the Bioscience Institute laboratories is used to obtain the DNA to be sequenced through an advanced technological process that employs Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques. The gene sequences obtained are analyzed through an advanced bioinformatics analysis to determine the presence of any mutations in the genes under examination.

The test results are available in approximately 30 days.
