EXOHAIR - Exosome Therapy for Hair Loss

The EXOHAIR protocol: what happens in a session, number of sessions and aftercare

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what you are looking for. Our specialists will review your request and suggest the right clinic for you.

EXOHAIR is Bioscience Institute's exosome therapy for hair loss: exosomes from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells are delivered with fine microinjections into the thinning areas of the scalp, in an outpatient session that typically requires no downtime. This page explains the EXOHAIR protocol, what happens in a session and how the course is planned.

For how exosomes act on hair follicles, which types of hair loss respond and what the evidence shows, read our main guide to exosomes for hair loss. Exosomes for other uses are covered in our guide to exosome therapy.

EXOHAIR at a glance

EXOHAIR follows the same five steps for every patient, adapted to the pattern and stage of hair loss.

What is in an EXOHAIR treatment

EXOHAIR uses exosomes extracted from human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). They carry the regenerative cargo of those cells, including lipids, messenger RNA, microRNAs, cytokines, growth factors and proteins, which act on follicle cells, on the blood vessels that feed them and on local inflammation.

The exosomes are produced in Bioscience Institute's GMP-certified laboratories and tested for quality and quantity. Every batch goes through a strict screening process that certifies sterility, safety for use and endotoxin levels before it reaches the clinic, and no living cells are injected into the scalp.

Before your first session

The first visit decides whether EXOHAIR is the right treatment and how to use it. The specialist asks when the hair loss started and how it has progressed, about family history, illnesses, medication, diet and stress, and examines the scalp, often with a dermatoscope to look at the follicles closely.

Blood tests, for example for iron, thyroid function or hormones, are requested when the history suggests a medical cause that should be corrected first. Standardised photographs of the crown, the parting and the hairline are then taken as the baseline for every later comparison.

What happens in an EXOHAIR session

An EXOHAIR session is a short outpatient procedure. It follows these steps:

  1. Cleansing: the scalp is cleaned and disinfected; the hair does not need to be shaved.
  2. Mapping: the thinning areas are marked according to your pattern of hair loss.
  3. Comfort: a topical anaesthetic or cooling can be used to reduce discomfort.
  4. Microinjections: the exosomes are delivered with precise scalp microinjections, placed across the treated areas so they reach the follicles.
  5. Finish: the scalp is cleaned again and you can leave straight away.

The treatment is minimally invasive and is customised to the extent and pattern of hair loss, from a receding hairline to diffuse thinning across the top of the head.

After the session

EXOHAIR typically requires no downtime, so you can return to work the same day. Small red points or slight tenderness on the scalp can appear and settle quickly.

Your specialist gives you aftercare instructions, such as when you can wash your hair and when to resume exercise or hair colouring. Tell the specialist about any minoxidil, finasteride or supplements you use, so the plan can take them into account.

How many EXOHAIR sessions do you need?

EXOHAIR is planned as a course of sessions followed by maintenance, because hair grows in cycles and follicles need repeated signals. The number of sessions depends on the type and stage of hair loss, how long it has been present and how your scalp responds.

Hair grows about 15 centimetres a year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and a new growth phase takes time to show at the surface. Progress is therefore judged with photographs over several months rather than weeks. Once density has improved, occasional maintenance sessions help preserve it, especially in pattern hair loss, which is progressive.

How progress is measured

Progress with EXOHAIR is measured with the same tools at every visit, so the comparison is objective. Standardised photographs of the crown, the parting and the hairline, taken with the same lighting and angle, show changes in coverage, and trichoscopy, the magnified examination of the scalp, can show hair density and the thickness of individual hairs.

Your own observations count too: how much hair you lose when washing and brushing, how the hair feels and how it styles. Because hair grows slowly, the first review is planned months after the start, not weeks.

Safety and side effects

EXOHAIR is minimally invasive and generally well tolerated. The most common effects are brief discomfort during the injections, small red points and slight tenderness of the scalp, which settle quickly. Exosomes are cell-free and have low immunogenicity, and every batch is screened for sterility, safety and endotoxins.

Treatment is postponed if there is an infection or an active skin condition on the scalp, and the specialist reviews your medical history and medication before the first session.

Who is EXOHAIR for?

EXOHAIR is designed for men and women with thinning hair whose follicles are still active. Typical candidates have:

  • androgenetic alopecia, male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss, especially at an early or intermediate stage;
  • alopecia areata, where the immunomodulatory effect of exosomes is relevant;
  • diffuse thinning with weaker, finer hair;
  • a wish for a non-surgical option instead of, or before, hair transplantation;
  • an unsatisfactory response to minoxidil, finasteride or corticosteroid injections.

Areas that have been completely bald for many years have few active follicles left, and EXOHAIR cannot create new follicles there; a transplant may be the realistic option for those zones.

EXOHAIR, HAIRSKILL and XHAIR

Bioscience offers three hair treatments that work at different levels. EXOHAIR is the in-clinic exosome treatment described here. HAIRSKILL uses your own adipose-derived stem cells, obtained from a small sample of fat, and is described on our page on stem cell hair treatment. XHAIR is an exosome-based cosmetic for home care, described on the XHAIR page.

The specialist may combine them, for example EXOHAIR in the clinic with XHAIR at home. If you are comparing EXOHAIR with platelet injections, read exosomes vs PRP.

What affects the cost of EXOHAIR

The cost of EXOHAIR depends on the size of the area treated and the number of sessions in the course.

  • Extent of hair loss: hairline, crown or the whole top of the scalp.
  • Number of sessions and maintenance.
  • Blood tests and scalp examination at the start.
  • Home care products, if included in the plan.

FAQ

What is EXOHAIR?

EXOHAIR is Bioscience Institute's exosome therapy for hair loss: exosomes from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells are injected into the thinning areas of the scalp with fine microinjections.

Is EXOHAIR painful?

The microinjections cause mild, brief discomfort, which a topical anaesthetic or cooling can reduce. Small red points on the scalp settle quickly.

How long does an EXOHAIR session take?

The injections themselves take a short time; with cleansing, mapping and numbing the visit is brief, and you leave straight away.

How many EXOHAIR sessions are needed?

EXOHAIR is a course of sessions followed by maintenance, set according to the type and stage of hair loss. Progress is judged with photographs over several months.

Can I wash my hair after EXOHAIR?

Yes, after the short interval your specialist indicates. There is typically no downtime, and you can return to work the same day.

Can EXOHAIR be combined with minoxidil or finasteride?

Tell the specialist about any medication you use, so it can be included in the plan. EXOHAIR is often considered when these treatments alone have not given enough result.

What is the difference between EXOHAIR and HAIRSKILL?

EXOHAIR uses exosomes from tested mesenchymal stem cells, while HAIRSKILL uses your own adipose-derived stem cells obtained from a small sample of fat. The specialist recommends one or the other after examining your scalp.
